Prevent logging time on completed/on-hold projects

This article is for Tempo for Cloud and Data Center

Tempo addons cannot restrict time logging based on project status, but logging time is a project permission that is managed by Jira project permissions.

To prevent users from logging time on completed/on-hold Jira project, you will need to remove access for "Browse projects" or "Work on issues" project permissions of the specific project.

  • Removing "Browse projects" will remove seeing the project/issues. You cannot log time on issues that you cannot see/find.

  • Removing "Work on issues" will remove logging time on the issues.

If you wish to manage multiple projects, you can create a project permission scheme to apply the same project permissions for all the users/user groups on these completed/on-hold projects, instead of managing them one by one.

For example, you have 10 projects that are using Jira "default permission scheme". After 3 months, two of the projects are completed and no one should modify them any more. Instead of deleting/archiving them, you still want to keep them for Finance team to run reports. You can create a new "completed permission scheme" to grant "Browse project" permission for Finance team and remove all other project permissions. Whenever a project is completed or on-hold, you can assign the project to this "completed permission scheme". When a project is no longer on-hold, you can assign the project back to "default permission scheme" and continue working.
