Management of perspectives in Structure

This article is for Structure Data Center.

Question

I want to restore an expired perspective, and I would like to know if stored perspectives can impact performance.

Answer

By default, perspectives expire 30 days after they are created. This setting can be changed in the Maintenance settings of Structure by adjusting the ‘Optimize structure perspectives’ parameter: https://help.tempo.io/structure-dc/latest/automatic-structure-maintenance

You can either extend the lifespan of perspectives to 60, 90, etc days, or you can disable the mentioned option altogether, ensuring that perspectives never expire.

Note: although storing perspectives doesn’t occupy a lot of space in the database, it’s good grooming practice to occasionally remove old perspectives. Either way, the number of created perspectives doesn’t affect the performance in any way.

If you want to restore an expired perspective, it is possible by restoring Structure from a backup made at least one day prior to the perspective’s expiration date: https://help.tempo.io/structure-dc/latest/structure-backup-restore-and-migration

But this will result in loss of all changes made in Structure after the said date, and it might be easier to recreate the perspective manually since the backup & restore process can take a lot of time.
