Logging Time to Tempo Accounts

Logging your time to a Tempo account is how you get the data that you need. When you have time logged to the correct accounts, you can get accurate reports for certain initiatives or projects, such as the number of hours logged to a billable Tempo account for invoicing a customer.

There are three methods that you can use for logging time depending on how Tempo accounts are set up in your company:

  • Using the Account field in the Jira issue view: all the time logged (all worklogs) to an issue will use the same account that is linked to it here. This takes the guesswork out of using the correct account when you log your time.

  • Using the Account work attribute in the Log Time form: you select the account you want each time you log your time. This offers the flexibility of easily selecting from multiple accounts for a Jira issue. Each account is associated to an individual worklog.

  • Using both the Account field and work attribute: set up the preferred account in the Jira issue, then have the option to override this account in the Log Time form.

Logging Time to a Tempo Account Using the Account Field in a Jira Issue

This is the simplest way for you to log time to a Tempo account, and helps you avoid making errors when logging time. If you don’t need to change accounts when you log your time to an issue, and many companies don’t, the Account field in Jira issues is probably the best setup for you.

The preferred account is already selected for a Jira issue so that all time logged to that issue (all worklogs) is automatically linked to that account - there's no other step required to log time to an account.

  1. Make sure that the Account custom field has been added to the Jira issue screens and that Tempo accounts have been linked to their related Jira projects.

    Setting the default Tempo account for a Jira project is also recommended when multiple accounts are linked to a Jira project.

  2. Select a Tempo account from the Account field in the Jira issue view if one isn't already set. You can also change this account if necessary, but then it will affect all time logged (existing worklogs) to this issue.

  3. Log time to an issue in this Jira project as usual - all worklogs for the issue are then associated with this account.

  4. Check the time logged to an account in its Timesheet - see Viewing Time Logged to Tempo Accounts.

If a different Account is selected for the issue later, all worklogs will be connected to that new Account. This makes it easy to manage the time already logged to an account.

Logging Time to a Tempo Account Using the Account Work Attribute

With this method, you select the account for a Jira issue each time you log your time. It requires a bit more effort than setting the account for the Jira issue, but it offers the flexibility of selecting a different account when logging time - multiple accounts can be associated to the same Jira issue.

  1. Make sure that the Account work attribute has been created and that Tempo accounts have been linked to their related Jira projects.

    Setting the default Tempo account for a Jira project is also recommended when multiple accounts are linked to a Jira project.

  2. Log time to a Jira issue and select the account you want in the Account dropdown in the Log Time form.

  3. You can check the time logged to an account in its Timesheet - see Viewing Time Logged to Tempo Accounts.

The Account dropdown is in the Hidden fields in the Log Time form by default, but you can drag it up to the Visible fields so that it's easily available when you log your time - see how to customize it in The Log Time Form.

Logging Time to a Tempo Account Using Both the Account Field and the Account Work Attribute

This can be the best of both worlds if you are comfortable using accounts. You set the preferred account in the Jira issue, but have the option to change to another account when you log your time, essentially overriding the preferred account. This can be useful if multiple teams or individuals are logging time to the same issue, and need to use a different account that what has been set in the Jira issue.

  1. Make sure that the Account custom field has been added to the Jira issue screens and the Account work attribute has been created.

    As well, Tempo accounts need to have been linked to their related Jira projects.

  2. Select a Tempo account from the Account field in the Jira issue view.

  3. Log time to an issue: the account is already set in the Account dropdown in the Log Time form because it was set in the Jira issue view, but you can select another account here.
