Google Calendar for Tempo Timesheets

Integrating Google Calendar with Tempo Timesheets allows you to see all of your scheduled meetings and events in My Work. You can then log your time using the calendar event cards. See Logging Time to Your Activities for more information.

Watch our video: How to connect your Calendar to Tempo

If you add the Jira issue key in the title of the Google Calendar event (such as INT-45 Meetings), the app can push the time you spent in the calendar event to the Jira work item. You can then log time to that work item with one click.

An administrator can connect your Tempo account to your Google Calendar automatically if they install the Google Calendar app for your organization. If the app is already installed for your organization, the tile doesn’t have the Install option.

"Private" or "Free" calendar events are not synced to Tempo.

  • Calendar events are visible in My Work only while Google Calendar is connected.

  • Activities (including calendar events) will not display in My Work when the day is locked from logging time.

You can also connect and disconnect the Google Calendar app using the Integrations menu in My Work in Tempo Timesheets - see Connecting Your External Calendars for more information.

Install the Google Calendar App

  1. Select Apps in the Tempo sidebar.

  2. Go to the Integrations tab.

  3. On the Google Calendar tile, click Install. The Calendar connection page opens.

    • Enhanced Calendar with automation includes Tempo Automation, which helps you log time faster by displaying your calendar events in your Activity Feed. Calendar suggestions in the Activity feed are displayed in 15-minute increments.

    • Basic Calendar connection offers basic functionality without automation. No information is stored.

To learn more about either option, see Understanding the Difference between Basic and Enhanced Calendar connections.

  5. Sign in with your Google account, then confirm your sign-in.

  6. The Tempo app must have permission to access your calendar. Click Allow.

Tempo only requires view permission to to retrieve and display calendar information. Refer to the table below for details on calendar permissions requested by Tempo.

  1. If you selected Basic Calendar connection and you have multiple calendars, select the one you want to connect to My Work.

  2. Click Go to My Work to see your calendar events in both the Calendar and List views. The calendar activity cards are identified with the Google icon.

When installed, the Google Calendar app is added to the Installed section on the Tempo Apps home page.

To log time to these activities, see Logging Time to Your Activities.

Calendar Permissions Requested by Tempo

Connection Type

Permissions Requested

Permissions for individual user connections

All the following permissions are read-only; no write permissions are requested:

Retrieve a list of the user's calendars, read the user's free/busy status, and open a channel to listen for calendar changes via webhooks.

For displaying the account identity shown on the calendar connection settings page. No profile information aside from the ID is stored.

For displaying the account email shown on the calendar connection settings page. The email is not stored in our system.

Permissions for organization-wide connections

Organization-wide connections, permissions requested are the same as those listed above for individual connections. The only difference is how access is granted.

For organization-wide connections, a Google Workspace administrator creates a service account, grants it domain-wide delegation for the permissions listed above, and then uploads the service account key to Tempo. Tempo uses that key to request access on behalf of an individual user when it needs to read their calendar.

To identify which Google account a Tempo user corresponds to, Tempo reads that user's email address from their Jira account and uses it as the delegation subject. The email address is used at the time of the request and is not stored by Tempo; instead, it is read from Jira each time access is renewed.

Disconnect Your Calendar

If you do not want to see your external calendar as activities in My Work anymore, disconnect the calendar.

  1. Select Apps in the Tempo sidebar.

  2. Click the Google Calendar tile.

  3. Click Sign out.

The calendar activity event cards are removed from My Work.
