Colors on Roadmap (Timeline) or Swimlane View are Not Matching Expectations

Problem

In a Portfolio's Roadmap (Timeline) or Swimlane view, items or headers are colored inconsistently, or a color palette change doesn't seem to apply everywhere.

Solution

Color behavior depends on three separate settings interacting: Color By, Palette, and whether headers are set to inherit the item color.

  1. Open Format > Colors.

  2. Confirm Color By is set to the field you actually want driving color (e.g., Status vs. Team will produce very different results).

  3. Check whether Header inherits item color is enabled — if it is, header colors will follow item colors rather than any manual header color assignment.

  4. If you manually assigned colors to specific header values, confirm those assignments still match the current Color By field — changing Color By can make old manual assignments look mismatched.
