Can't find Item Types or Custom Statuses settings, or changes don't seem to save

Problem

The settings icon doesn't show an Item Types or Custom Statuses option, or a hierarchy level or status you added earlier isn't available when creating items later.

Solution

Item Types and Custom Statuses are configured globally in Settings, separate from any individual portfolio. If this setup is skipped or only partially done before you build your portfolio, later steps (like assigning a status to a new Initiative) won't have the options you expect.

1. Click the settings icon in the upper-right corner.

2. Open Item Types and confirm your intended hierarchy exists (e.g., Initiative > Feature > Epic > Task). Add any missing levels or item types.

3. Open Custom Statuses and confirm your workflow statuses exist. Add any missing statuses and set a default if needed.

4. Return to your portfolio — new item types and statuses should now be available in the Create Item panel.

To prevent this in the future, fully build out your hierarchy and status workflow in Settings before creating any Initiatives or Features — changing hierarchy after items already exist can require re-mapping them to new types.
