Can Users Without Tempo Access Still Log Time in Jira?

Question

If access to Tempo Timesheets is limited to certain users, can everyone else still log time in Jira using Jira’s built-in time tracking?

Answer

Not while Tempo is the Time Tracking Provider. Jira Cloud allows only one provider to be active at a time. With Tempo selected, Jira’s native “Log Work” option is replaced by Tempo’s “Log Time”. Users without the Tempo Timesheets Access permission can’t use Tempo’s option, so they can’t log time at all, including from the work item. Limiting Tempo access also removes time logging for everyone outside that group.

You have two options:

  • Keep Tempo as the provider and grant Tempo Timesheets Access to everyone who needs to log time. All Jira users have this permission by default. See Global Permissions.

  • Switch the provider to Jira. Users can then log time in both places. In Tempo views such as My Work, time is logged through Tempo. In Jira views such as work items, it’s logged through Jira using Jira’s native “Log Work”. However, some Tempo features won’t be available. From the work item, you can’t log time from the Tempo panel, and the Tempo side panel isn’t available. Approvals and team timesheets aren’t available. Worklogs created in Jira will sync to Tempo, but they can’t take advantage of work attributes, and they don’t respect Tempo’s settings for closed periods. See Selecting Tempo as Your Time Tracking Provider and Worklogs are being created when the period is closed.
