Does Custom Charts for Jira Data Center support migration to Jira Cloud?

Question

Can Custom Charts for Jira Data Center be migrated to Jira Cloud with the Jira Cloud Migration Assistant (JCMA)?

Answer

Yes. Custom Charts for Jira Data Center 7.8.4 and later supports migration to Jira Cloud with JCMA. When Custom Charts is marked as needed in Cloud, JCMA first migrates the Jira data, and then Custom Charts creates the gadgets and their configuration on the Cloud site.

One requirement affects how the migration runs. To recreate each gadget, Custom Charts acts on behalf of the dashboard owner. Atlassian's Forge platform currently does not allow apps to act on behalf of users who have not yet logged in to the Cloud site and verified their email address, and users who have migrated to Cloud arrive in that state. Gadgets on dashboards owned by these users are skipped, leaving dashboards empty even when JCMA reports the migration as complete.

This is an Atlassian platform limitation tracked in ECO-1507 and cannot be changed within Custom Charts.

There are two ways to proceed, although neither is seamless:

  • Service account: Dashboard ownership is passed to a single service account, which is a user account with the required permissions on both Jira Data Center and Jira Cloud that has logged in to Cloud at least once. The data is migrated, and the original owners are restored on Cloud afterward.

  • Migrate and activate users first: migrate users, have every dashboard owner log in to Cloud, and migrate Custom Charts afterward. This depends on every owner logging in before the migration, which is often difficult to arrange.

Adding your vote to ECO-1507 and raising it with Atlassian, or with your Atlassian Cloud Migration Manager if you have one, helps Atlassian prioritize it.
