Linked Items & Sub-items
While sub-items allow you to easily show the parent & child relationship between two items on your roadmap, Linked Items can help to provide full visibility of the relationships and restrictions between items and sub-items across multiple roadmaps. Any sub-item is able to have links between itself and other non-parent items on the same roadmap, as well as on other existing roadmaps. Additionally, the sub-item will display a badge that shows the number of Linked Items it has when viewing it in both the Items Table and on the roadmap.
While this functionality is standard, there are a few limitations that users should be aware of when working with Linked Items & Sub-Items:
All Linked Item types can be added to sub-items and Standalone Items.
At this time, Parent items can only support the Relates To Linked Item type. Note: If Date Inheritance is enabled, Parent item dates will automatically update & move to reflect changes made by Linked Items to any child item dates.
Linked items on sub-items will display a line on the Timeline if the Standalone Sub Items setting is active.
Linked Items can be added to sub-items with or without dates. If there are no dates for your sub-items, Relates To will be the only Linked Item type available. Learn more: Linked Items
Key Dates & Sub-items
Sub-items allow users to break down major initiatives into smaller, more manageable pieces and groups; however, Key Dates allow you to show another level of detail by defining key phases, dates, or deliverables of both items and sub-items. In the Timeline view, key dates for the parent item are visible on the roadmap while all other dates are limited to visibility within their respective item cards.
While Key Dates are a standard feature for all users, there are some limitations and potential roadblocks which users should be aware of when working with Key Dates & Sub-Items:
Key Dates can only be visualized if the item or sub-item using them has dates. Items using a bucket time instead of a standard time period cannot use Key Dates. Any items or sub-items moved into bucketed time will have their Key Dates removed—this cannot be undone.
Key Dates are unavailable on the Swimlane view for both parent and child items.
For more information on how to use Key Dates in your roadmap, see Key Dates.
Milestones & Sub-items
While Milestones can be used on roadmaps that have sub-items, they are unable to interact with this feature in the way that other existing items would. Milestones are fixed indicators that spotlight your organization's goals or deadlines on a roadmap. They cannot have sub-items, linked items, or key dates assigned to them and must be created solely as standalone indicators of major events or milestones.
