Building a Structure in Speed Mode

Speed mode is the easiest way to add and organize work items, so you can begin managing projects in Structure in just a couple of minutes. To get started, all you have to do is:

  1. Pick some projects to include (your scope)

  2. Tell Structure which work items to include and how to organize them

If you need more control over the work items in your structure, try Power Mode. Learn more about the different modes: Speed Mode and Power Mode

Step 1: Define Your Scope

Select the projects you want to include in your structure. You can select as many projects as you need.

This does not add all the work items from these projects to your structure – you will decide which work items to include in the next step – but it does limit which work items can be included. Only work items in the selected projects can appear in the structure.

If you don't want to include all the work items from a project, you can add additional filters in the next step.

Step 2: Organize Your Work Items

Next, organize your work items by adding levels to the structure. You can add work item levels or group levels:

  • Work Item level - add a new level of work items based on work type. When you add a work item level, you need to select the work item type and link type (how these work items are related to the work items above them). In some cases, Structure will select the link type for you, but you can edit it if necessary.

  • Group level - group the work items in the level beneath it based on a Jira field.

You can add work items/groups in any arrangement.

Filter and Sort

To filter or sort a work item level, hover over the level and click the three dots (...) to the right.

You can also use this method to group the work items by a Jira field.

To apply a filter at the project level, click the Filters button beside the projects list at the top of the screen.

Step 3: Name and Share Your Structure

Give the structure a name and a meaningful description (optional). To share the structure with members of your team, select the appropriate option under Sharing.

Once you're finished, click Create and the new structure will be built automatically.

Next Steps

If you're happy with the structure you've created, move on to Working with Columns.

If you need more control over the work items in your structure, move on to Building a Structure in Power Mode.
