Story Point Planning

This feature enables you to estimate work using story points, which are automatically converted into hours for capacity planning purposes. Create story point schemes mapping points to hours and associate them with one or more teams. A default scheme is available for all users, but you can create custom schemes and assign them to specific teams on the Teams page.

Each team can have its own mapping scheme for story points, reflecting its unique estimation practices. If no time estimates are provided, the system uses story points as the fallback to create plans.

Prerequisites

Enable Story Points

  1. Select Settings in the Tempo sidebar.

  2. Under CAPACITY PLANNER, select Planning Time.

  3. In Sync Individual and Team Plans with Jira Issues, select Configure.

The system automatically creates a default Story Point Scheme. The default scheme contains story point values that follow the Fibonacci sequence, which is common practice in agile methodologies.

Create and Use Story Point Schemes

  1. Select Settings.

  2. Under CAPACITY PLANNER, select Story Points

  3. A default story point scheme created by the System is displayed. You can edit this cycle by selecting the pencil icon under Actions. Otherwise, you can create a new scheme.

  4. Select +Create.

  5. The Create Story Point Scheme dialog opens. The following fields display:

  • Name: Enter a name for the story point scheme.

  • Description: Enter a description for the scheme.

  • Configuration: You can enter your own custom Story Points values in the left column. The minimum story point can be 0 or any other decimal or integer number. Estimates can be entered in hours or minutes, with hours as the default. Use 'm' for minutes and 'h' for hours.

  • +Add Rule: Use this icon to add additional Story Point rows.

  • Trash icon: Remove a Story Point row.

  • Set as default: If a Story Point Scheme has not been set at the team level, the default scheme will be used.

  1. When you are done, select Save. Your new Story Point Scheme appears in the window.

  2. To use the new scheme, navigate to the Teams page and select your preferred team.

  3. In General Information, select the scheme from the Story Point Scheme drop-down. If you would like to use an alternative scheme, select it here.

Select Use default if you want the team to always follow the system's default setting. If the default scheme is changed, then all teams that have this option will now automatically use the new default. If the current default scheme (“Default Story Point Scheme (Default)” in the example) is selected, then the team will continue to use that scheme when a new one is chosen as the default.

You are now ready to estimate in Story Points. When planning, assign story points to issues in Jira. Plans are created automatically based on the story point estimates.
